atNorth data centers to be connected to Snerpa Power’s software platform to develop solutions for the improved utilization of the Icelandic power system.

The leading pan-Nordic colocation, high performance computing and artificial intelligence service provider, has announced that it will cooperate with Snerpa Power in order to maximize the energy efficiency of their data centers

Under a new cooperation agreement, atNorth data centers will be connected to Snerpa Power´s software solution to track electricity consumption in real time and automate processes related to load forecasting and scheduling.  The objective is to minimize deviations and increase accuracy in electricity purchases.

The Snerpa Power software platform provides a direct connection to the balancing market for electricity in Iceland. The companies will explore the possibilities for atNorth to sell electricity back to the grid in the form of balancing energy resulting in improved utilization of renewable resources, leaving more room in the market for the energy transition. The pilot project is expected to activate atNorth as a user in the electricity market, automate processes and contribute to a more efficient and sustainable power system.

Benedikt Gröndal, Managing Director of Operations, atNorth said “atNorth builds its services on renewable energy, produced in a sustainable way. Responsible use of energy resources and excellent energy efficiency has guided our decisions from the start. Energy efficiency and the origin of electricity are often cumbersome in our conversations with customers. We are hoping that the cooperation with Snerpa Power will further improve the energy efficiency of our data ccenters and support important innovation aimed at better utilizing the renewable energy produced in this country which is a socoeconomically important project.”

Ásdís Ólafsdóttir, ESG Manager, atNorth added

“Support for sustainable innovation is close to us, so it is a joy to start collaborating with Snerpa Power and supporting the pioneering work that will lead to better utilization of resources.”

Iris Baldursdóttir, Managing Director of Snerpa Power, continued to

“It is inspiring to come across power intensive users who are so well aligned with our mission, which is to increase the efficiency of the power system, it´s competitiveness and speed up the energy transition. We can't wait to work with atNorth to make that happen and believe that this pilot project is only the start of a long and fruitful cooperation.”

About Snerpa Power

SNERPA Power creates intelligent energy solutions that tap into the full potential of the power intensive industry, creating new revenue streams for its industrial customers, increasing their competitiveness and leaving more room on the market for the energy transition. The Snerpa Power software platform is an intelligent link between the balancing market and the power intensive user that unleashes flexibility and activates the user as a participant in balancing the grid.

Today, a total of 140 MW are reserved in power plants around Iceland to ensure that the power system is always in balance and to avoid blackouts. If power intensive users would provide these balancing services, more power and energy would be available for the energy transition and to meet Iceland´s ambitious climate goals. The potential savings from the efficiency improvement is up to 375 kton CO2/year if used for direct electrification of transport. 140 MW is equivalent to the installed power of a medium to large sized hydro power plant and around 5% of the total installed power in the Icelandic power system.

We can't wait to work with atNorth to make that happen and believe that this pilot project is only the start of a long and fruitful cooperation.
