Faxaflóahafnir and SnerpaPower announce partnership

Faxaflóahafnir (Associated Icelandic Ports) has signed an agreement with the Icelandic energy technology company SnerpaPower to deploy its software solution to support the electrification of the harbour.

With upcoming large-scale shore power projects and increased ship connectivity, the harbour's electricity demand is expected to rise significantly. This poses challenges for both power distribution and infrastructure operations, making predictability, planning, and efficiency in electricity procurement critical. SnerpaPower’s solution will enable Faxaflóahafnir to address these developments in a secure, sustainable, and cost-effective manner.

The project represents an essential step towards increasing the use of renewable energy in harbour operations and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Smaller cruise ships docking at the Old Harbour are already utilizing shore power at Miðbakki and Faxagarður, significantly reducing their fossil fuel usage. Larger shore power projects, allowing bigger ships to connect to shore electricity, are planned, and implementing this software is part of the preparation for those projects.

Under the agreement, SnerpaPower will provide Faxaflóahafnir with a powerful energy management system specifically designed to forecast electricity consumption at the harbour and efficiently optimize the utilization of electrical infrastructure. This technology will simplify operations, enhance energy efficiency, and support Faxaflóahafnir’s ambitious sustainability goals.

The solution also supports Faxaflóahafnir's future plans for larger and more comprehensive shore power projects at harbour sites.
