Unlocking More Grid Capacity Without Building New Infrastructure

As electrification accelerates across industries, one challenge becomes increasingly urgent: how can we unlock more capacity in the power grid without waiting years for new infrastructure to be built? The answer may lie in operating the existing grid smarter. The Norwegian Smart Grid Centre has recently released a short video explaining how the MaksGrid project aims to increase utilization of Norway’s power grid by up to 25% through smarter, more coordinated system operation.

A Smarter Approach to Grid Utilization

MaksGrid combines three key approaches to enable more dynamic and efficient use of the power system:

- Dynamic transmission limits

- Coordinated automatic system control

- Risk-based operation and planning

The core idea is both simple and powerful: real grid capacity depends on real-time conditions rather than static assumptions.

Unlocking this hidden capacity requires technologies, operational data, and market mechanisms to work together seamlessly. By enabling more adaptive system operation, the project demonstrates how existing infrastructure can support significantly higher utilization while maintaining system security.

At SnerpaPower, we contribute to this vision by enabling power-intensive industries to schedule consumption accurately and activate flexibility in real time. This helps unlock additional capacity from the existing grid while supporting both operational efficiency and grid stability.
